Endpoint security vs. productivity in the public sector: a false choice?
Cyber criminals have enjoyed some spectacular hits on the public sector in recent years – WannaCry probably being the most widely reported and analysed. They have targeted public sector institutions because they often present a relatively soft target in terms of older, often complex and bespoke infrastructure which make the application of security best practice and procedures difficult.
Many security problems have been aggravated by the pandemic – particularly those associated with remote working. The NHS has different challenges as it struggles to keep afloat in this second wave of COVID-19 admissions. The productivity of clinical and business staff using mobile devices is literally a matter of life or death, but the impact of a piece of ransomware locking out patient records again as WannaCry did, could be similarly so.
